Synoptic Project – Modelling

So far i have already created different models such as a sword, barrel, anvil, bench, cart. There is some already textured as well such as the anvil and sword.

This is what they look like so far:

While i have been modelling some small assets Dylan has fully created and blocked most of the docks. Liam has been trying to help him place all of the models and lay them out in good places. Dylan has also decided that he will be creating the blacksmiths as i will be struggling to make the village by creating at least 4 different types of houses. Liam also went to Jorvic in York to get some ideas of what he will be creating when he is making some concept art sketches.

Synoptic Project – Starting To Model

This week in the scrum Liam suggested that we would start modelling as we had improved the planning. For this week me and Dylan will be modelling the docks of the viking project, furthermore we will be also adding small and medium assets to the project. Dylan is the one who created the blueprint of the docks so i have suggested that Dylan creates the actual docks while i will work on the medium and small asset’s.

We had some problems deciding if we were going to just create the model and leave them texture for now or actually do them one by one and texture them as we go. We all agreed on working through the model and texturing them straight away rather than leaving them.

Synoptic Planning – Overview

Summary:

Over the past few weeks my team and I have been planning ahead of the synoptic project, when we come to making the idea which Liam has done for the viking village we will not be rushing straight into it. So far we have been doing weekly scrums and changing leader each week to make sure that we are all making progress and are doing certain tasks.

What i have been doing so far:

  • PowerPoint Research
  • Colour Pallete
  • Texture Images
  • Created The Trello
  • Made My Individual Task Sheet
  • Made Different Prototype Models
  • Burn down Chart
  • Made A Spread Sheet Plan
  • Gathered Audio

What my team have done so far:

  • Asset List
  • Production Schedules
  • Blueprint Village/Docks
  • Concept Art
  • Blocking Out Docks
  • Environment Models
  • Scrum Sheets
  • Research Power Points
  • Contribution Forms
  • Individual Production Schedules

Synoptic – Prototypes

I have started creating models for planing what i want to make and do for the project these are only examples for now unless they are decent enough to be made into realistic models.

So far i have made:

  • village house which is still being finished.
  • wall torch what will go on the inside and outside of buildings.
  • ground Torch with a brazier for the outside pathways.
  • Sword.
  • Shield.

I made these models so i could get an idea of how the models are going to look and to get an idea of how long it is going to take to get to a certain point of modelling an object. So far i have spent roughly two and a half hours on just making the house. For the torches it had taken an hour and half for both. For the sword the time taken was an hour as i used a template to create it so it didn’t take too long. However the shield was about two hours to make as i had to create the inner metal frame with the screw heads on the shield as well.

I used Arnold render to create renders, i also used directional lights to create the shaded effect to make the model look more aesthetically pleasing.

Synoptic – Planning

So far we have just about finished our planing the Production schedule, PowerPoint’s, Audio, Colour Palette and textures are done. We have all discussed different ideas for the blueprint but we didn’t know what to do for the village. We have decided what to do for the docks and Dylan has made the blueprint for it. I have also started making prototypes for some models and Dylan has started laying out the docks. So far i feel as though we are keeping on top of our work and we have done a lot of planing. We have got each others social media, created a trello and made a gmail with everything we need in it. Liam has also been doing a lot of the planing as well and i feel as though we are exceeding ahead and meeting our goals compare to the other teams.

Village House Render Unfinished

This is one of the ideas i was thinking of doing for a house it is not finished though i was planing on making a door and making the roof full of tiles. Then i would be able to populate the environment with assets on the outside of the house. I would also plan on breaking down the house to texture and maybe baking the planks of wood separate.

Synoptic – Viking Village

For the synoptic project i have been selected into a team were we will be making an interactive environment. The environment is going to be a viking village with a dock heavily based on a Norse theme. My role is to be the 3D artist along with my teammate Dylan who is also a 3D artist in this project. There is also Liam our Concept Artist who will be making blueprints and various drawings. I will be mainly focusing on creating the village and populating it with models as well as texturing. Dylan will be doing the same but instead he will be making the docks.

We have started planing the project using various things such as Trello and create a google drive so we can communicate and share files and work. This will help us be more planned out and we can get the project done more efficiently. We have also got colour palettes and we have created various stuff like asset lists.

Pitch – Review

I finished creating my pitch and kept the same theme although i feel as though i did as much as i could my idea was unsuccessful. But i now know that i need to be more interactive with the audience to sell my idea. I made a storyboard and used reference images in my pitch to try and give the audience an idea of what i wanted to make and how i wanted it to look (Post apocalyptic). The style was going to be realistic and the project was mainly just for modelers to create and environment to show off creativity skills.

When i was presenting the pitch i couldn’t get my idea out to people as i suffer from anxiety and i found it hard to talk to some many people. This made me struggle to speak properly and get my idea out so i just focused on trying to finish the pitch as best as i could. If i was okay with talking to a crowd of people i would of felt more confident and i would of been able to actually speak about my idea more openly.

Creating A Pitch

I have started to create a pitch for my synoptic project and i have decided to make a post apocalyptic project based on Mad Max and Star Wars. I got this idea after i started playing a game called Kenshi this gave me various ideas of some sort of environment with a desert. I like the idea of making some sort of sewer opening with a small settlement or hideout. I could make it abandon or active and have lots of props and possibly some cars to make it look more mad max themed.

Space Station – Imagine Worlds

At the beginning of this project i was stuck with two people in my group to make a blacksmith scene for modelling and this would need to be rendered. But unfortunately my group was not putting in the effort to make the project work and to be handed in on time. So i decided to leave the group and join a different one which had more of a planned idea.

It was to build a Space Station scene with animated models and different rooms to make a video on the project we were doing. I was already Four weeks into the project when i joined but i managed to catch up and keep up with my team. At first it wasn’t easy as i had to get to know everyone again but our communication as a team was good and we were very coordinated.

We started planing at what to do and my role was to model and texture the small and medium assets of the Space Station. I started creating the models for my team straight away and got loads done by the end of the project, but the problem was my texturing wasn’t as good as what they were doing so i asked my teammate Matthew if he would be able to help texture as his role and i would do all the small asset models instead. Matthew still helped with some models and done some UV unwrapping as well as doing the texturing as well.

Michael and Ian were doing the modular assets on the project such as building the project up and making environment of it as well. Michael also was doing the planning for the team to keep everyone in line and so we would all know what task we were doing and what to get on with. Ian was mainly doing modular building and started creating some medium sized assets for the team as well such as a vending machine.

Liam was our concept artists who done a lot of work on sketching on the pen and paper and use to help us with ideas for the modelling as well as making the concept art. It was mainly Liam who done all of the art side of things and our other teammate Jessy who joined very late didn’t do much in the project at all. I feel as though she didn’t contribute to the project and non of her models or art work was not in the project.

Overall we made all the different sections of the project and added them all together in Unity. The Space Station was built and we were late on submitting the project, we were planing on making animation for the models to bring the scene to life. We didn’t have time to animate and create different lighting for the project. This made the project a lower grade because of our late submission.

I feel as though i made enough models for my contribution and i helped a lot with the project when creating the models. What i could of done better is textured my own work when creating the models. I feel as though i didn’t push myself to create the texture i did have a go a doing this but my textures were not as good as the other people in my group.

This was my best assets of the project i created the models but Matthew done all of the texturing:

C&T Submission

I have done my final submission of the project and i have created and sculpted the model of an alien. Furthermore i have created the sculpt as well as changing the geometry and using re-topology. I also baked the model to make it more detailed but have less polygons.

Planning:

Refrences of powerpoint

I used the reference images to create some quick sketches for my model i experimented different sizes and shapes. When doing this i used a pen so i wouldn’t end up rubbing out any ideas and more drawing them and seeing what i could create.

Development of the model overtime:

When creating the low and high poly in Mudbox 3D i started with the low poly and created layers as i went so the high poly would be made separate.

When i was unwrapping the low poly i had to use a planar map to do it as some of the UV’s were very bad. So i fixed the UV by doing this and then i baked my high poly on to the low in substance.

This is the model fully rendered and i have made layers of detail, You can see i have created lots of shading and contrast into the different colours.
